Mycetoma
Mycetoma, or Madura Foot, is a mutilating life-threatening skin disease, endemic among farm workers in many regions around the globe, including Brazil, Mexico, Tunisia, the Arabian peninsular and areas of India. One of the least reported diseases it has two forms - bacterial and fungal - and even using the most advanced electron microscopy it is difficult to distinguish from one another.
In 1991 the Mycetoma Research Centre at the University of Khartoum in Sudan was established to treat victims and to find a cure for this disease which affects young people in low socio-economic classes.
We wish to acknowledge the co-operation of Professor Ahmed Hassan Fahal, Director of the Centre, his team of dedicated doctors and also patients, who gave Medicimage permission to photograph their work.
